New Calvary Baptist Church

History Of Our Church

“The Church That Is A Family….Under God”

This congregation was formed as the outgrowth of the request of a number of people who knew God and came together for the purpose of working out their soul’s salvation. The first meeting was held at the first church site at 6th and Dauphin street.

The first organizational meeting was held August 24, 1973 in the sanctuary of the church at 6th and Dauphin Streets and and in attendance was Reverend McClary, Deacon Nelson, Trustee Childs, Trustee McClary and others. The Church was officially organized. After eight days and eight nights of prayer, our Pastor recommend to the church that the new church be named “ New Calvary Baptist Church” explaining the understanding that there would be some “new calvaries” for us to bear in taking on this kind of job for Almighty God.

Our first formal service of worship was held on the first sunday in september 1973. Our Pastor’s text was taken from Matthew 28:18-20 verses. His  subject was “In Changing Times A Changeless Christ”. Although this was our first service, we felt the presence of god.

Circumstances later that same year brought us to this location, 2431 North Fifth Street.

Many of our member felt very discouraged upon arrival here that sunday morning, but God was in the plan. shortly after our moving into this building the lord made it possible for us to call it our own. The church met and authorized Reverend clarence McClary, Deacon Granvil Nelson and Trustee James Childs the power of attorney to handle the tranaction of purchasing of the property. The By-Laws Which are in part the Church’s Constitution were presented and voted upon. And the transaction was made by the grace of God.

Out of the sacrifices of “a faithful few” and the the friends whom God has raised up for us along the way, a Vision given some long before this church was ever established has been fulfilled. And with gratitude in our hearts and thanksgiving upon our lips, we can truly say, “This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it”.

“Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it”. It is our never ceasing prayer that this building may always be:

“A city of refuge” for those in distress;

“A fountain of healing” for those who are sick ;

“And a lighthouse” for those who are walking in darkness, and being torn by the briars and brambles of the world.
